The „European Reaserch Council“ (ERC) announced on 9 December 2020 the top researchers that successfully applied for a consolidator grant. ICR group leader Reinier Boon is one them. He will receive funding for 5 years to investigate the role of non-coding RNAs in aging.

Ageing is the most prominent cause of heart failure. The main type of heart failure in the elderly is heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, in which the heart does not properly fill with blood. In the consolidator project, Prof Boon will investigate the contribution of non-coding RNAs in this aging-related disease. The ultimate goal of the project is to identify novel targets to treat aging-induced heart failure.

The ERC Consolidator Grant funding helps mid-career researchers to address frontier research questions, build up their teams & have far-reaching impact. In total 327 top researchers received a ERC consolidator grant funding worth in total €655 million
