UNI:hautnah – University Up Close: Insights into Medical Education and Research

To provide a firsthand look at medical education and research in Germany, our institute recently hosted a project for a group of young Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Germany. Although the participants came from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, they all shared a strong interest in cardiovascular science.

The last day of the project was structured to connect academic concepts directly with practical laboratory work: The final session began with a seminar on cardiac anatomy led by Dr. Guillermo Luxán. Following this theoretical introduction, the group examined pig hearts: this experience allowed the participants to analyze anatomical structures firsthand.

The interactive format encouraged an open dialogue throughout the day. The participants engaged closely with the topic, contributing to the discussions with focused questions. This exchange also provided an opportunity to address practical aspects of university life, medical career paths, and research opportunities within academia in Germany.
